  • Academic Immersion Year

    10,000 kr162,000 kr
In this program, students discover the richness of figurative and realistic painting fused with academic draughtsmanship, and endeavour to discover how the masters created works of universal significance. Over the course of 40 weeks, you will be fully immersed in the education and culture of the Florence Academy of Art. Students of all levels work together under one roof. You will be welcomed into a community of hard working students that includes the three-year Academic Program and other workshops and courses. All of the instructors work in studios on the school premises, allowing students to benefit not only from daily instruction but also from watching the professional artist at work. This relationship, developed over many hours spent together in the studio, is significant to the general atmosphere of the school and is considered fundamental to the student’s development. The faculty will guide students through the techniques and materials that will improve their understanding of how to translate three-dimensional forms into two dimensions. Instruction is designed to take students of all levels through a series of exercises aimed to develop their observational skills and accuracy in drawing and painting, whilst learning a methodology to observe and translate directly from nature. After an introduction of studying old master drawings to understand measurement, proportion and shadow shape, students progress to drawing from the plaster cast, and painting the still life, portrait and the figure while practicing the use of pencil, charcoal and oil. The program allows students to experience each part of the three year Academic Program in Drawing and Painting curriculum at The Florence Academy of Art. Working from life is a unique and fulfilling experience, one that is fundamental to the training at The Florence Academy of Art and central to a long-standing tradition. Working from a live model, students will learn how to approach the human figure, observing proportion, body type and gesture and important anatomical points. With pencil there will be a focus on outline and shadow line to explain the form. With charcoal and oil paint, focus will be on mass and overall sense of light and atmosphere through comparison of light and shadow shapes. At the end of each week students will be encouraged to continue to work on the exercises in the program, or work on their own projects under the guidance of instructors. Additional visits to the Museum of Natural History and Gothenburg Museum of Art to sketch from their respective collections will be scheduled. There are three levels of this program, enabling students an individualised time of study at the FAA:
    1. Experience – students focus on getting acquainted with materials and a variety of projects.
    2. Intensive – students with prior experience looking to improve accuracy and efficiency.
    3. Foundation – students will work on fundamentals, aiming for an application to the Academic Program at FAA (or similar institution).
We welcome students of all experience levels. In the beginning of the school year, and in dialogue with the Program Director, students will choose which level they will follow during the year. Download a PDF of the full program description and syllabus here.
  • Throughout history the study of anatomy has played a major role in the education of both the representational painter and sculptor. Recognizing and understanding both the skeleton and the muscles and how they affect movement, form and surface anatomy are skills that help the artist in both accurately capturing nature and using more creative freedom while working with the figure. Écorché refers to a traditional way of studying anatomy by either drawing or sculpting the figure without skin. During the course students learn about the construction of the full skeleton, including the surface muscles and the proportions of the figure. They begin by first sculpting the bones and then adding the muscles one by one, on one side of the sculpture, leaving the skeleton on the other side for reference. The course starts with a set of lectures during the morning to prepare the student to sculpt during the afternoons and then moves quickly to sculpting full days with occasional lectures. Students are expected to continue after class to work independently on their ecorché sculptures. The material used is oil-based clay that allows for flexibility and maximum control over small details. The lectures together with daily individual critiques ensure that each student gains a deep understanding of anatomy and gets a taste of how the skills studied during the course helped great artists of the past in creating their masterpieces. Beginning – Intermediate – Advanced levels welcome. Maximum enrollment 15 students. COURSE FEE 17 000 SEK COURSE DATES

  • Drawing the human body is one of the cornerstones of artistic training and is central to the education at The Florence Academy of Art. The anatomical complexities of the human form help us to improve our observational and interpretative skills. We invite anyone with a passion for art to join us in the model room for 5 weeks. The model will hold the same position for each 2 or 3 hour session. This gives students the chance to make an advanced study of the figure, which is a unique opportunity not found in most figure drawing classes. Beginners and experienced artists alike are welcome to join. Professional feedback will be given on an individual basis in English or Swedish. We will provide chairs and drawing boards for everyone. Students can help themselves to an easel if there is an empty space 10 minutes before class begins. You need to bring pencils, paper, tape and an eraser. Class times: Mondays / 16:30-18:30 Tuesdays / 16:30-18:30 Course Dates (5 weeks each): Between Sep 30 - Oct 29 (2024) Between Nov 4 - Dec 3 (2024)

  • Instructor: Toby Wright

Join us for an inspiring and immersive two-week workshop (2 x 5 days) with renowned artist Toby Wright, designed for artists who want to refine their wildlife and landscape sketching skills and translate them into studio paintings. This course is perfect for those passionate about nature, combining fieldwork with studio practice in a supportive, dynamic environment. The workshop begins with daily outdoor sessions, where participants will sketch directly from nature, focusing on capturing the essence of wildlife and landscapes with precision and spontaneity. Toby Wright will guide you through his expert techniques for sketching in the wild, teaching you how to observe and depict the subtle interplay of light, color, and form. This will be applied to both static animals in museums, and live animals outdoors. All along the sketching and painting action, you will hear Toby talk about the history of diorama painting, natural history painters, and artists that collaborated with science and conservation initiatives. In the second week, we’ll move into the studio, where you’ll learn how to assemble your sketches into a larger, cohesive composition. Toby will provide one-on-one guidance as you develop your own painting, pushing your artistic boundaries while offering professional insights on composition, color harmony, and storytelling through art. Expect a fun, inclusive atmosphere that encourages creative exploration, yet remains challenging and professionally enriching. By the end of the two weeks, you will not only have advanced your sketching and painting techniques but will also gain new confidence in your ability to bring the beauty of the natural world onto the canvas. Focus is given to the intermediate stages as much as the final piece, enhancing the value of each part of the process: sketching, drawing, colour study, compositional experiments etc. This workshop is open to artists of all levels who are ready to deepen their artistic practice in a setting that combines the best of both outdoor adventure and focused studio time.
