Instructor: Toby Wright
Join us for an inspiring and immersive two-week workshop (2 x 5 days) with renowned artist Toby Wright, designed for artists who want to refine their wildlife and landscape sketching skills and translate them into studio paintings. This course is perfect for those passionate about nature, combining fieldwork with studio practice in a supportive, dynamic environment.
The workshop begins with daily outdoor sessions, where participants will sketch directly from nature, focusing on capturing the essence of wildlife and landscapes with precision and spontaneity. Toby Wright will guide you through his expert techniques for sketching in the wild, teaching you how to observe and depict the subtle interplay of light, color, and form. This will be applied to both static animals in museums, and live animals outdoors. All along the sketching and painting action, you will hear Toby talk about the history of diorama painting, natural history painters, and artists that collaborated with science and conservation initiatives.
In the second week, we’ll move into the studio, where you’ll learn how to assemble your sketches into a larger, cohesive composition. Toby will provide one-on-one guidance as you develop your own painting, pushing your artistic boundaries while offering professional insights on composition, color harmony, and storytelling through art.
Expect a fun, inclusive atmosphere that encourages creative exploration, yet remains challenging and professionally enriching. By the end of the two weeks, you will not only have advanced your sketching and painting techniques but will also gain new confidence in your ability to bring the beauty of the natural world onto the canvas. Focus is given to the intermediate stages as much as the final piece, enhancing the value of each part of the process: sketching, drawing, colour study, compositional experiments etc.
This workshop is open to artists of all levels who are ready to deepen their artistic practice in a setting that combines the best of both outdoor adventure and focused studio time.
