Drawing and painting the human form is one of the cornerstones of education at The Florence Academy of Art. Through careful observation of live models, students not only create art—they become artists. Every day, they immerse themselves in the study of the human figure—nude forms and portraits alike—discovering both technique and expression in this continuous exploration.

Our models are at the heart of this process. They are the living presence that brings artwork to life and enables our students to grow. Ralph Marting is one of these dedicated models, an irreplaceable part of our community since the founding of our Swedish branch in 2007. Over the years, he has shared his time, experience, and above all, his passion for art. Even at 90 years old, Ralph continues to stand before our classes, inspiring students with his presence and unwavering commitment.

Recently, we had the honor of celebrating Ralph’s 90th birthday with a heartfelt tribute to his years of dedication. As a token of our gratitude, he received a specially crafted book filled with drawings, paintings, and sculptures created by our students over the years.

This book is not only a testament to Ralph’s significance within our institution but also a beautiful record of the creative energy that emerges in the meeting between model and artist. Two copies of the book were printed—one gifted to Ralph, and the other placed in our library of art books.

A warm thank you to Ellen Barkin, one of our distinguished alumni, who initiated this touching project and contributed to the book’s design. Through her dedication and generosity, we now have a collection of memories and artistic creations that will live on in our community for years to come.

Lastly, we extend our gratitude to all our alumni who contributed by submitting their works for the book. Your participation made this tribute possible, and we are deeply thankful for your support and shared love of art. Ralph was truly moved by this gesture and cherished the book dearly—a response that, for all of us, was the greatest reward of all.
